Unionati?[edit source]

I notice you used the expression "Unionati Regia" for "United Kingdom." I think that NL provides "unisa" for "unite," which means the word ought to be "unisati." -- BRG 14:18, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

NL also gives
noun: unione
verb: uniona
and: Unionati States
U.K. isn't there but by analogy I thought "Unionat(i) Regia" would be suitable. You might have noticed I made templates for European countries. I regard the neologisms, especially the spelling, as provisional at present. Nov ialiste 14:41, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
I had not noticed that "Unionati States" was given; I had gone about it from the attempt at "unite". This is one of the problems with NL only going one way. Now, of course, I have to go back and change dozens of references in the pages I created! -- BRG 15:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

I've noted you've made some changes to articles I've written. Most seem justified, but you're using "kom" in a way I think that doesn't agree with my understanding of the meaning as given in NL. It always implies a comparison, I think, meaning "as" only when "as" means "like." -- BRG 13:58, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

It can also translate "as being", "to be". It is not only comparative; consider :kom li presidanto me konsidera li afere kom finat. Here "kom li presidente", "as the president" is essive. Nov ialiste 14:23, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Stylistic corrections[edit source]

While your correction of my writing where I haven't found the exact word in NL, or where I've made a typo, is appreciated, perhaps we ought not to make changes that are just because we have different writing styles. In AIL (see [1] last paragraph) Jespersen says that "prol" and "pril" are "not so good" as "al," "del," "dal"; he doesn't call them "unacceptable." I happen to like to avoid a lot of small function words coming together, so I tend to combine prepositions with the article a lot, anf you altered "frol" to "fro li" in an article. This, to me, seems to be a matter of style, and not something to be corrected. -- BRG 18:31, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

The forms "al", "del" and "dal" are very natural which is why Jespersen used them. He then has to specifically indicate disapproval of "prol" etc.
Quote one example where Jespersen has used "prol" etc., apart from the section where he advises against them in preference to the full forms. They are unnatural and thereby to many seem ugly. One attraction of Novial is its avoidance of too many mechanically produced unnatural forms. At least now I know you used it deliberately and to leave them alone. Nov ialiste 18:51, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

Nomes de landes[edit source]

Thanks for your comments. OK - I guess I messed Egypt up quite a lot. For the ones not in NL, you suggest leaving them as is - as is in which language? Perhaps the main language of the country. Alternatively we could try to be as phonetically close? I'll look forward to your notes on the "Afrika" talk page. Any chance someone can help with a "Template:Infobox_country" I tried using a couple but gave up"- does "Fake Boxe lande" make sense? --Wayne 19:17, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Let me look at the template question. Some of the English Wikipedia templates are quite complex with many subtemplates which have to be included.
I'm wondering how we should best handle the Novialization (or not) of countries and cities. The countries in NL are mostly European and novialized. But they follow derivational patterns between person-adjective-county. For example, anglo-angli-Anglia. Englishman-English-England.
I looked at the European countries and capital cities to try to formulate a policy. Some countries cannot really be Novialized, like Liechtenstein. I think unless there's any easily obvous Novialization it's probably best to leave it in the local form (main local language) or a widely international form if they differ a lot, possibly with somewhat Novialized spelling, where that looks good.
A good example is Ljubjana. I believe the "j" is pronounced like a "y" in Novial. This might suggest a form "Lyublyana". However, my guess is that to the locals this might look pretty horrible. Consider the Finnish town Jyväskylä. That's impossible to Novialize and any attempt would look awful to Finns (only by luck are the bigger towns like Helsinki, Turku and Tampere okay spelt as they are in Finnish). Basically each case has to be considered on its merits and local forms and widely international forms considered. I've left Ljubljana as is and that spelling is also common internationally.
Originally I changed some z's in European names to s's but now I have serious doubts. "Z" is perfectly legitimate in proper nouns so maybe we should stick to local spellings there. "W" is also legitimate, so if Zimbabwe is nicer for Zimbabweans there's no necessity to change it.
Use your African knowledge to advantage. I'll post a list of countries in NL in the new page "Listes de vordes in Novial Lexike segun teme" linked from the Chefi pagine.
I hope you enjoy learning Novial. It's a really nice language and it will grow on you. This Wikipedia also needs all the help it can get. Where did you first learn about Novial? Nov ialiste 21:11, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
OK. I'm starting on the countries and have done a simple template (we can beef it up later). Please check it out Template:Info_boxe_lande especially the spelling. If you're happy I'll populate Afrika. What is "currency" and "time zone"? I could do with a dictionary! I currently use Dan Blahedo's pages, but it goes the wrong way and searches aren't perfect.
I can't quite remember where I first learnt about Novial - I was quite young - it may have been a sci-fi book - perhaps Harry Harrison. Then I redicovered conlangs a few years back on the web, started learning eo and then rediscovered Novial.
Incidentally there are a couple of Shona (the main Zw language) issues around using W or V (which is a soft V almost like a W) in Zimbabwe but I get your arguments. I'll certainly move Botsvana back to Botswana. --Wayne 15:10, 16 desembre 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess time zone is "tempe-sone". Currency might be something meaning "money unit" but unit isn't in NL. I'll check in AIL. The template looks good. Nov ialiste 01:48, 17 desembre 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pozdrav,[edit source]

Hey, I really like this project and hope that it prospers. I was the one that translated your request into Bosnian. I do not speak "novial" but if you ever need anything just ask. I am active on both the Bosnian Wiki and English Wiki. Greetings, Vseferovic 22:46, 17 novembre 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your encouragement. I think what we need most of all is information and beginner's courses in languages other than English. I haven't spotted an official policy, but I think we're using Jespersen's original. I don't have strong view as one of the problems I see with eo is the Fundamento. I like the -r verbs but I've seen good arguments against them - but I don't recall them off hand. BRG is probably best to ask. --Wayne 20:18, 31 julie 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you use the template in one article, please? Then I'll put in the others. First, I'll make a stub, then I'll put the template and, when I'll have all the towns of Soria, I'll meliorate them. What do you think? Are you agree? --Chabi 08:27, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I will use the template for the "Madrid" page. Thanks. Nov ialiste 08:29, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've copied the templete from the Aragonese Wikipedia, it's still mostly in Aragonese. It doesn't find the images though (they would need to be at Wikicommons, I believe). Do you know how to fix it? The template uses sub-templates. I copied one called "Canto". What does that mean? It helps the display a little. I will look again later to see what you say. Nov ialiste 09:06, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we have all the stubs of Soria villages. Now, I'm going to start putting templates and interwikis. It's a lot of work, but I think that in a month we'll have all the templates put. I need your help to do this 'cause I don't understand how it works a template. Thanks for all. --Chabi 12:34, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Give me a few days and I will get the template to work. I also am quite new to using templates. Nov ialiste 12:39, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! You're the best. It realley works. But I must correct you something.

Castiella y Lión is in Aragonesa, the name is Castilla y León. Redolada is region in Aragonese language. --Chabi 13:49, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The places are all in Spanish. When we'll have to do the vilages of Aragón. We can put it in Aragonese but the names of the villages in Soria are in Spanish. --Chabi 16:51, 27 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have the articles about countries. They seem poor! What can we do? I'll triy to ameliorate ir, but, how? --Chabi 07:02, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What articles do you have and in which language? Nov ialiste 09:40, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I wrote it wrong I wanted to say:

I've SEEN the articles about countries....--Chabi 10:21, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. They need a lot of work but we don't have many contributors. Nov ialiste 10:23, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you want, you can make a template, like the other about the places in Spain and I'll help you. I'm very sorry but I don't speak this language yet. --Chabi 10:27, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm hoping to make more country templates. I think a Spaniard or Aragonese can learn Novial very easily, so many words are similar and the grammar is quite simple. Now I am working on the Mammals, adding templates, taking information from the English Wikipedia. Nov ialiste 10:35, 28 oktobre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Loga"?[edit source]

You seem to have invented a word. I don't think we can accept unilateral word creations; if you think we need a new word, we need to get consensus. We all agreed to stick to standard Novial, which not only means not using the N98 changes but not inventing words outside the NL unless there is a really complete consensus. -- BRG 19:04, 9 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's certainly useful to discuss neologisms. However, thousands are necessary and authors will often have to use their own initiative.
The root "log-" is not a neolgism, see NL loge ED log(g), F loch. I changed that in response to the query about the appropriateness of "desregistra" - a distinction between to register and to log in is probably needed. I certainly wondered about the use of direct derivation of a verb "loga" and I'm always open to suggestions.
I have indeed already made some neologisms (i.e. roots never previously used). In Esperanto many neologisms have been made. Some become widely accepted some do not, that's the way a language in real use goes.
Who is this "we" you refer to? You seem to think you have the authority to dictate every word in Novial. You don't and the idea that every word needs the sanction of some sort of committee is, under prevailing circumstances, entirely impractical; furthermore, if Novial is a real language for use rather than a toy language it is wholely undesirable. Nov ialiste 01:53, 10 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You ask "who is this 'we'" Before this Wikipedia was created there was a rather detailed discussion on the Novial discussion list, and some discussion on the Auxlang list as well. It was agreed by everyone on the list that there would be an adherence to the language described by Jespersen in "An International Language" and "Novial Lexike."
Of the people who commented on the creation of this wiki, you and I seem to be the only regular participants (I notice James contributed for a while this year). So I suppose "we" is in practice you and I. So we're agreed that sometimes new root words will be needed where there is no alternative (as was commented and agreed upon at the inception of this wiki). Nov ialiste 22:20, 15 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In any case, I checked in what sense "loch" would be a French translation of "log" -- it was defined as "loch, un instrument de navigation mesurant la vitesse d'un navire." (see fr:Loch (homonymie), fr:Loch (bateau)) This means the log used to measure a ship's speed, not at all connected with "log" in this sense.
I don't claim "the authority to dictate every word in Novial." What I am stating was that one condition that was set by others for supporting the creation of this Wikipedia was conformity to Jespersen's Novial. This is not my condition, but it was put forth by others, specifically because I had been involved in plans to update Novial!
Where your neologisms have conformed to the procedures followed in the creation of the AIL and NL, I have had no complaint; in fact I agree that new words are necessary. The problem is that there is absolutely no justification for this particular one, and in fact the word "loge" that you cite is good reason that it cannot be used; the derived verb "loga," if you want to create it, would be given a different meaning: en:Chip log defines the noun, so the verb would mean "to measure the speed of (e. g., a ship)."
The best term is debatable but I feel we need to be able to translate e.g. "register or log in " with 2 different verbs. The English term "log in" and the German " sich einloggen" ("sich anmelden") both of which use the same root "log-" (originally from the maritime term) suggest this is a plausible derived word. In the modern base languages this root is familiar from "login" as a noun.
Webster's 1913 gives:
Log (n.) The record of the rate of ship's speed or of her daily progress; also, the full nautical record of a ship's cruise or voyage; a log slate; a log book.
and
Log (n.) A record and tabulated statement of the work done by an engine, as of a steamship, of the coal consumed, and of other items relating to the performance of machinery during a given time.
Also the verb:
Log (v. t.) To enter in a ship's log book; as, to log the miles run.
in addition to the physical apparatus.
Wiktionary gives the French as "identifier". This suggests "identifika se" as another possibility. A term for "log out" is also needed. So one possibility is a verb "loga" meaning "to enter into a log", "loga se", "to log oneslf" i.e. "log in" and the opposite "desloga se", "to log out". If we were to follow the French "desidentifika" seems rather strange. Nov ialiste 22:20, 15 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Identifika se" doesn't look bad to me (in fact, after writing that, I thought a bit and it looks pretty good to me; what you are doing is identifying yourself to the system!). Another site gave "ouvrir une session" as French; perhaps we could base the word on that. You could have "aperta un sesione," and for logging out, "klosa un sesione." What do you think? -- BRG 15:28, 20 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've created a new page with a table listing the terms from the other Wikipedias. We can discuss this there: Novi vordes/Login Nov ialiste 19:04, 20 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've copied the previous two comments to there. -- BRG 21:03, 20 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you feel "registra" is not the right word, perhaps a discussion is appropriate. I certainly do not claim any veto power, but I do maintain, and I did in my original comment, that a unilateral creation of a word, where there is no consensus, is inappropriate. When there is an obvious word, of course -- if one wanted to use "televisione," for example, I can't imagine much opposition. But this is not in that category. -- BRG 01:05, 15 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The creation of new words by individual author's is absolutely essential and unavoidable. Novial can only stagnate otherwise. I derived a word from an existing root. I'm not willing to wait possibly an indefinite amount of time each time I need to derive a word. Nov ialiste 22:36, 15 novembre 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Novial on fy-wikibooks[edit source]

Hi,

(Excuse my English, I'm not exactly fluent in Novial.) At Frisian Wikibooks is the beginning of a course in Novial. Can you check whether what we have there is correct? Mysha

Hi,
we often communicate in English anyway. Yes, I checked that material which all looks correct. Only one chapter unfortunately. Nov ialiste 06:30, 17 desembre 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Danko. Me skripted folie (?) du. (I wrote a page 2; took all the time from when I first asked you until now. Can you check again? I also don't know whether a car has a specific motion word in Novial.) Mysha
I think "vada" for a car is good. I do not know of the word "pedi". "Pede" means "foot" but "to walk" is "marcha" (there's another verb "promena" which means go for a stroll or take a walk, but here I guess "marcha" is better).
So, "li viro marcha", "li kate marcha", "li kavales marcha". The rest looks good. If you like you can give me English versions and I will translate them into Novial. By the way, "page" is "pagine". Nov ialiste 00:08, 20 desembre 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Pedi" came from a page with poor layout. It turns out to be the wrong language. Does that mean that all verbs end in 'a'? I built the language of the page around the photographs I could find; there wasn't an English version for you to translate to begin with. If I do another, it would probably be something easier, like numbers. Mysha
Not all verbs end in "-a". Some end in "-e", some in "-i", some in "-u" and one ends in a consonant, the verb "es" (to be). Nov ialiste 09:18, 7 januare 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Me skripted pagine tri: http://fy.wikibooks.org/wiki/Novial/3 (Can you proofread again?) Danko. Mysha

Good. I corrected one small error. "Les homes lekte." -> "Li homes lekte." Thanks for making these pages. They are very clear. Nov ialiste 21:42, 29 aprile 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please, could you make a better article of the Bible. It's quite short in this Wikipedia.

I'd try to make articles about "urbes de Soria". --Chabi 09:36, 21 desembre 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not in novial. What can we do with it? Do we delete it? --85.54.152.67 13:54, 22 desembre 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. I think that I shall delete the text as I don't have time to write an article now. Nov ialiste 12:35, 23 desembre 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! How are you? I haven't been here for ages. I need your help.

  1. How do you say in novial "According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 5,755 inhabitants."
  2. Could you translate this article onto Novial please? --Chabi 14:58, 9 januare 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation of a short story[edit source]

Hi my friend!

I would like to request something from you. Yes, translation. I hope, it's not a bad thing for you. Some years ago I wrote a (really) short story about a lonely man (actually symbolized the Saami nation). I translated into some languages and I thought, it would be great to have it more, like also in Novial  :) Right now I have 112 translations. I made this page, the English translation is somewhere there. You can put the Novial translation there. Thank you again! Sorry for my disturb... :( - hu:User:Eino81

Hi. Yes, I shall make a translation in a week or two. Nov ialiste 22:51, 25 septembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Which is the original version of the text? Nov ialiste 19:01, 26 septembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I translated from the Finnish version. The text is on your talk page at the Hungarian Wikipedia. Nov ialiste 20:46, 26 septembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Kiitoksia. Sitten puhut suomea :)! Niin, katsoin sivuasi :) Mistä sinä olet kotoisin? Suomen kieli on niinpä maailmankieli... Muuten alkuperäinen teksi oli pohjoissaamen... --Eino81 16:10, 27 septembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Minä olen britti, mutta asun Suomessa. Nov ialiste 14:36, 28 septembre 2009 (UTC)[reply]

connectivity project[edit source]

Hallo, my name is Anastasiya Lvova, I'm "duty" in Connectivity project. The essence of the "Connectivity" project is to study and enhance the coherence of Wikipedia, or, in other words, to improve hypertext navigation between articles. The project deals with deadends, isolated articles, non-categorized articles, transitivity of the category tree, etc.

We want to work with your language version, but we need configured MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage for it (with direct links to template namespace pages, for example, ru:MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage/de:MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage/fr:MediaWiki:Disambiguationspage). Is it possible to set it up for our usage?

thanks in advance, Lvova 18:20, 13 june 2010 (UTC)[reply]

message from translatewiki.net[edit source]

Greetings from translatewiki.net where you are registered as a translator for the language Novial (see http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Portal:Nov). It appears that no translators for this language have made any translations during the past year, so we write to remind you about us. We hope that you can find time and opportunity to make some contributions to this language and/or find some others who could help to translate, perhaps starting with the 500 most used messages in Mediawiki at http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translate&task=reviewall&group=core-0-mostused&language=nov.

Find out about all the latest projects which use translatewiki.net for localisation at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page. Read the introduction to translating at http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Web_interface. If you have any questions on how to use translatewiki.net please ask at Support http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support, or try asking in another language (for example Russian, Arabic, Hindi) on the talk page of that language.

With best wishes. Lloffiwr 15:56, 15 oktobre 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your admin status[edit source]

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on novwiki, where you are an administrator. Since that wiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.

We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.
